Chinese Tuesdays: Personality determines destiny
Here's a poster from the wall of my kitchen that I’ve left up. It says: “Forever bear firmly in mind: Personality determines destiny.” (永远牢记 性格决定命运 yǒngyuǎnláojì xìnggéjuédìngmìngyùn.)
For a long time I read it as "Your personality determines your destiny", but my neighbour told me it was written by the woman who lived there before me, to remind her husband not to lose his temper with their daughter. So in that context it should be translated as something like “Your character decides the fate of your child”.
Then again, both could be held as true.
